Religion

Quaking with certainty,
You’ve never been so uncertain
In your life.

You throw your head back,
Uttering oaths
To make heaven’s pink cheeks pale.

Eyes bulging
Beneath silky eyelids—
Squinting and wincing—

Heart beating madly
In fervent anticipation,
You wait for Him to strike.

Nothing.

No response;
Night and silence—

Then triumphant laughter
Shatters the calm:
This flash of full impertinence.

So easily persuaded, you are—
Why accept the simple answer,
KISS-ass?

You call it weakness in the
Face of disaster and tragedy—
I call it Religion.
